We started this tradition last year as a way to be able to show my parents and in-laws what the kids were doing and learning in school. It turned out to be awesome and the kids loved showing off all their work. We have tried to incorporate a meal that reflects our current study at the time. Last year it was right around Thanksgiving and so we had a meal that they would have had that first thanksgiving. Very different from the way we do it today! This year was later in the year because we were waiting on the schoolhouse to come and be decorated, etc. so we could show it off. But since it fell right during Africa, we had a traditional African meal. Most of it was delicious, but some of it was just "okay". I made honey bread from scratch using a
recipe from Ethiopia. I followed the
recipe precisely but when I went to check on it in the oven this is what I found...
So needless to say, I had to cut off the top before serving it. :) It was still very good so that was a success. I also made a beef curry soup, mixed greens, ugali, and mango ice cream. The soup and ice cream were hits but the greens and ugali...not so much. Oh well, it made us all thankful to be able to have such a wonderful array of choices when it comes to our food.
The kids painted their faces like traditional African warriors and fun was had by all.
Can you say BLESSED? :)
What a great family!
